TMJ & Jaw Pain Treatment in Kolkata
Physiotherapy for jaw pain, clicking and stiffness (temporomandibular disorders)

Overview
TMJ disorders (temporomandibular disorders) cause pain in and around the jaw joint and chewing muscles, often with clicking, stiffness or difficulty opening the mouth wide. They are common and usually settle with simple care: jaw exercises, changes to habits such as clenching, and hands-on treatment for tight muscles. At our Kalighat clinic, Dr. Partha Sarathi Neogi assesses your jaw, neck and posture first. Care works alongside your dentist, who checks your teeth and bite.
How Dr. Neogi assesses jaw pain
- Your history: where the pain is, clicking or locking, how wide you can open, clenching or grinding, headaches, stress and sleep.
- Examination of jaw movement, the jaw joints and chewing muscles, and your neck and posture.
- Checks for signs that need a dentist or doctor first, such as a dental infection, swelling or numbness.
- A plain-language explanation and a plan, including jaw exercises and habit changes.
Why jaw pain happens, and how many sessions you may need
The jaw joints sit just in front of the ears and work with the chewing muscles every time you talk, chew or yawn. Overloading these muscles and joints, for example by clenching or grinding the teeth, chewing gum, long periods with the head forward at a screen, or stress, can cause pain, tight muscles and clicking. Clicking on its own, without pain or locking, is common and often harmless.
Care includes gentle jaw exercises, advice on habits and posture, and hands-on treatment of the jaw and neck muscles; dry needling may be used for tight muscles when suitable. Your dentist may suggest a night splint if you grind your teeth. Most people improve over a few weeks. How many sessions you need depends on your symptoms and how you respond, and progress is reviewed at each visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw to the skull just in front of the ear. People often say TMJ to mean pain or problems in this joint and the chewing muscles, which are called temporomandibular disorders.
Clicking without pain or locking is common and often harmless. It needs attention if it comes with pain, locking or difficulty opening the mouth.
It can contribute. Many people clench their teeth or tense their jaw muscles when stressed or concentrating, which can lead to pain.
Often both can help. A dentist checks your teeth, bite and need for a night splint; a physiotherapist helps with jaw movement, muscles, posture and habits.
Most people improve over a few weeks with exercises and habit changes. Your progress is reviewed at each visit.
It depends on your condition. After the assessment you will be told what to expect, and your progress is reviewed at each visit.
