Hip Pain Treatment in Kolkata
Physiotherapy for hip and groin pain, hip osteoarthritis and pain on the side of the hip

Overview
Hip pain can be felt in the groin, on the outside of the hip or in the buttock, and it can make walking, climbing stairs, sitting cross-legged or lying on one side difficult. Common causes include hip osteoarthritis, irritation of the tendons on the side of the hip, muscle strains and pain referred from the lower back. Most hip pain improves with the right exercises and changes to daily activity. Every first visit starts with an assessment by Dr. Partha Sarathi Neogi to find where the pain is really coming from.
How Dr. Neogi assesses hip pain
- Your history: where exactly it hurts (groin, side or buttock), what brings it on, any fall or injury, and your work, sport and sleep.
- Examination of hip movement and strength, and how you walk, stand on one leg and climb stairs.
- A check of the lower back, since back problems often cause buttock and hip pain.
- Screening for a fracture or other problem that needs a doctor or a scan first, and a plain-language plan.
Common causes of hip pain, and how many sessions you may need
Pain in the groin that is worse with walking, putting on socks or getting out of a car is often from hip osteoarthritis, which is common with age and responds well to strengthening exercise and staying active. Pain on the outside of the hip that is worse lying on that side, climbing stairs or standing on one leg often comes from the tendons of the hip muscles (gluteal tendinopathy, sometimes called trochanteric bursitis). Buttock pain may come from the lower back, and sport or gym training can strain the muscles around the hip and groin.
Care focuses on strengthening the hip and core muscles, improving movement, and changing the activities and positions that flare the pain; joint mobilisation and soft-tissue work can ease pain alongside exercise. How many sessions you need depends on the cause and how you respond, and progress is reviewed at each visit. Our joint pain page explains osteoarthritis in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common causes are hip osteoarthritis, irritation of the tendons on the side of the hip, muscle strains and pain referred from the lower back. An assessment finds out which applies to you.
It can be. Pain in the buttock, or pain that spreads down the leg, often comes from the lower back. Your assessment checks both the hip and the back.
Usually yes. Regular walking and strengthening exercises reduce pain and improve movement for most people. Build up gradually.
This is often from the tendons on the side of the hip; lying on that side presses on them. A pillow between the knees and strengthening exercises usually help.
Most people with hip osteoarthritis manage well with exercise and activity changes for a long time. A replacement is considered when pain and stiffness stay severe despite good care.
It depends on your condition. After the assessment you will be told what to expect, and your progress is reviewed at each visit.
