Physiotherapy or Chiropractic: How Is Care Chosen?
Start with your symptoms and goals rather than a technique you have seen online. At our Kalighat and Maniktala clinics, assessment comes before a decision about care. You should understand the proposed treatment and have the opportunity to ask questions.
What does physiotherapy involve?
Physiotherapy can include movement assessment, exercise, education and selected physical or hands-on treatments. Depending on the problem, goals may involve walking, strength, daily tasks or rehabilitation after injury or surgery. The plan should be linked to a specific difficulty you want to improve.
What does chiropractic care involve?
Chiropractic care uses hands-on approaches for musculoskeletal problems and may involve joint mobilisation or manipulation. A spinal adjustment is not a requirement for every patient. Discuss expected benefits, alternatives and risks before agreeing to a technique.
Can the approaches overlap?
Hands-on care and exercise can form parts of a broader rehabilitation plan. That does not mean every patient needs every technique or two separate treatment courses. Ask what each proposed part is intended to achieve and how progress will be checked.
When might a different assessment be needed first?
Tell the clinician about previous surgery, fractures, osteoporosis, medicines and any neurological symptoms. Some problems make particular techniques unsuitable. Manipulation can cause temporary soreness and carries a risk of serious complications; discuss this rather than assuming it is risk-free. Urgent symptoms or a suspected serious injury should be evaluated medically first.
Questions worth asking at your visit
What is the likely explanation for my symptoms? What are the alternatives? What are the risks? What can I do between sessions? How will we know whether care is helping? What will the consultation and proposed treatment cost? The answers should relate to your situation, not a guaranteed result for everyone.
Choosing the next step
Bring relevant reports and your medicine list. Read the clinic details and fees before travelling. If you are unsure which service to select, contact the clinic for an assessment rather than trying to diagnose yourself. Care is clinic-based; we do not offer home visits.
