After an Ankle Sprain: Planning a Return to Activity

The right recovery plan depends on the injury and your symptoms. Do not assume every painful ankle is a simple sprain.

General patient information from Chiropractic Solution. Sources are listed below. Your clinician will advise on your individual care.

Check whether assessment is needed

Severe pain, inability to walk, an unusual shape or a snapping sound with injury need urgent assessment. Worsening pain, repeated problems or symptoms that are not improving also deserve a professional review.

Recovery is not one timetable

Many sprains feel better within a couple of weeks, while more serious injuries can take months. Feeling less pain does not by itself mean you are ready for strenuous exercise. Physiotherapy may help when recovery is taking longer than expected.

Discuss your activity goals

Tell your clinician whether you want to return to stairs, long walks, work or sport. Ask what signs should guide progression, which activities to avoid temporarily and when to reassess. Follow an individual plan rather than copying another patient’s exercises.

At our clinics

You can request an ankle rehabilitation assessment at Kalighat or Maniktala. Bring any existing reports and explain the injury and treatment so far. The team will confirm your appointment time.
